Materials for commercial buildings

Offices, shops and other commercial buildings use the same building blocks as homes at a larger scale — with bigger spans, more floors and more demanding services: water storage and pumping, risers, drainage stacks and dedicated fire-water lines designed by specialists.

Building the 3D scene…

  1. Commercial buildings typically use a reinforced concrete or steel frame with larger spans.

  2. Facades combine masonry, glazing and cladding, sealed against weather with sealants.

  3. Large roofs need continuous waterproofing and well-placed rainwater outlets.

  4. Roof tanks feed the building by gravity; some capacity is often reserved for fire-water needs.

  5. Pumps lift water from the underground sump to roof tanks or boost pressure to the floors.

  6. Supply risers run in a service shaft with branches and valves at each floor.

  7. Soil and waste stacks are sized for the number of fixtures and vented above the roof.

  8. Rainwater downpipes carry roof run-off to storm drains or a rainwater harvesting system.

  9. Fire-water risers and hydrant points are designed to local fire regulations by specialists.
